The gauge that survived the flood
The flood took the bridge, the road, and two of my neighbor's fences. The gauge read every minute of it, and never went down.
What it saw
Stage rose eleven feet in six hours. The stilling well held, the pressure transducer held, and the satellite radio kept pinging long after the cell towers drowned.
Why it mattered
Downstream, the flood warning went out with real numbers behind it. People moved. The peak arrived exactly when the gauge said it would, plus or minus one hour.
The lesson
A gauge is infrastructure of the quietest kind — it just sits there and tells the truth. When the water comes, the truth is the only thing that moves faster.
